Balayage, The Hand-Painted Hair Art

(pronounced "bah-lee-AHZH")

Originating from the French term "to sweep" or "to paint," is an artistic hair coloring technique that involves skillfully hand-painting highlights onto the hair for a natural, sun-kissed appearance.

Today, the modern balayage look integrates traditional foiling with hand-painted strokes or techniques that create a blended grow out effect. We combine the traditional foils with 2026 techniques like: teasy-lights, babylights, tips-outs, and air-touch, to meet expectations of todays trends.

Balayage, answered

Everything you’re wondering before you book — from grow-out and gray to the right move for dark hair.

Balayage is a freehand hair-coloring technique where lightener is hand-painted onto the surface of the hair to create a soft, sun-kissed, grown-out look. The word comes from the French for “to sweep.” Because the color is painted rather than saturated to the root, it grows out without a harsh line — which is what makes it so low-maintenance.

Traditional highlights are woven into foils from root to tip for uniform brightness; balayage is hand-painted on the surface for a softer gradient with a seamless grow-out. In practice the line is blurry — modern balayage at Taylor Monroe blends both, combining classic foils with hand-painted techniques like teasy-lights, babylights, tip-outs, and air-touch to fit your hair and your goals.

Yes — balayage works beautifully on dark and Asian hair, but it takes a colorist who understands how dark hair lifts. Asian and naturally dark hair often pulls warm as it lightens, so placement and toning are everything. Taylor Monroe specializes in dark-hair balayage, building dimension that reads natural rather than brassy.

Balayage doesn’t “cover” gray the way an all-over color does, but it’s one of the best ways to blend and disguise it. By painting lightness around the face and through the part, grays get camouflaged into the highlights instead of standing out against a solid base — a softer grow-out with far fewer root touch-ups. We also offer dedicated gray blending if that’s the main goal.

The three tiers scale with how much hair gets painted. Mini balayage adds gentle dimension around the face and part — ideal for first-timers or a quick refresh. Partial concentrates lightening on the top half, around the face and off the part, for noticeable change without full commitment. Full balayage places strategic highlights throughout — nape to crown plus face-framing — for maximum dimension and movement.

It depends on the service: a mini refresh runs about every 6 months, a partial about every 4–5 months, and a full balayage about every 8 weeks. Because balayage grows out softly with no harsh regrowth line, you have more flexibility than with traditional foils — many clients stretch their appointments comfortably.

Plan for a few hours. Balayage is a hand-painted, multi-step process — paint, process, tone, and finish — and the timing scales with your hair’s length, density, and how much lift it needs. Booking a free 15-minute consult first lets us give you an accurate time estimate for your specific hair.

Pricing depends on the service level — mini, partial, or full — plus your hair’s length, density, and current color. The best way to get an exact quote is a free 15-minute consultation, where we assess your hair and map a plan and maintenance cadence that fits your lifestyle and budget.

Any lightening service lifts the hair, but balayage is one of the gentler approaches because color is painted onto the surface rather than saturated from the root, and isn’t fully re-applied every visit. With professional placement, proper toning, and a simple at-home care routine — which we’ll walk you through — balayage keeps your hair healthy-looking as it grows out.

Yes — low maintenance is the whole point of balayage. Because the color is painted to blend into your natural base, there’s no obvious regrowth line, so you can go longer between appointments without it looking “off.” It’s the go-to choice for people who want dimension and brightness without a strict salon schedule.
