SF Sustainable Salon

We Recycle, Redirect Our Trash & Toxic Waste

Read about the Green Circle Salon Program, and how we are apart of a team of 16,000+ Waste Warriors! As of today, GSC kept 7,219,005 lbs of beauty waste out of landfills and waterways since 2009.

EXCESS HAIRCOLOR

Do you ever wonder what happens to all of our left over haircolor, bleach, ammoniated product? We divert excessive toxic waste from our SF landfill and sewage system…

FOILS, COLOR TUBES & AEROSOL CANS

Metals are collected and sorted, aerosol cans are depressurized before sending them to one of GCS’s partner facilities.

HAIR CLIPPINGS

Today, 63,000 pounds of hair gets thrown away every day. Every garbage bag of hair produces greenhouse gases as it tries to break down, which contributes to climate change…

Today, over 42,000 pounds of excess hair color, lightener and toner is thrown away every day. When rinsed down the drain, it can find its way back into our drinking water and soil.

Hair-clippings are composted with other organic waste. It can be turned into bio-composite plastic to make new products like recycling bins. Hair will also be used to research and develop new environmental technology like insulation and stormwater filtration. Lastly it can be made into products to be used for Humanitarian efforts like “hair booms.”

Metals from aerosol cans, color tube and of course, foils used for highlights and balayage are sorted by grade and type. They are melted down into aluminum sheets or bars (called ingots). Ingots produce new products like car parts or bicycles.
